Can AI Be Used in Education? 12 Powerful Tools for Homeschooling Success

I started homeschooling in 2012 and never thought that AI would play a role in my homeschool. Many families turn to homeschooling to provide the best education for their children. With all the buzz around AI these days, the question for homeschoolers is this: how can AI be used in education?

What is AI (Artificial intelligence)?

AI is like having a smart digital assistant at your fingertips. Accessible via phone, tablet, or computer, it can help with a variety of tasks, from crafting lesson plans to solving complex problems. Many AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are free and easy to use.

Is AI Hard to Use in Homeschooling?

Using AI is as simple as Google search. You ask a question, and AI provides tailored responses. Unlike Google, you can request further clarification or ask the AI to explain things in more detail. You can also request answers in different formats, like a list or paragraph.

Does AI Save Time?

AI can actually save a lot of time since you do not have to comb through several webpages to find the information you are seeking. This is just one way that AI can be used in education.

In addition to saving time, AI can also help streamline the homeschooling process in various other ways, such as lesson planning, grading, and even teaching new skills.

Does AI Cost Money?

Many AI tools, such as Chat GTP, Claude, and Bard are free. Others that are specifically designed for learning, like Duo Lingo, Quizlet and Khan Academy, have free and paid platforms.

Can AI Replace Teachers in Homeschooling?

This is a question that is hotly debated about AI. Does AI replace people? In a homeschool setting, it is usually just a mom and her kids. The mom takes the role of teacher, reading specialist, French teacher, math teacher, fine arts teacher…….also meal planner, chore chart creator, bathroom cleaner…….often, a mother is juggling all of these roles. It can be overwhelming!

Think of AI as a tool that can assist with some of these tasks, making your homeschooling journey more manageable and efficient. AI doesn’t replace a mom. It might make mom’s life a little easier. AI might help moms quickly make chore charts, lesson plans, meal plans and grade composition assignments.

Since it is free to try, why not try to see if ai can be used in educating our kids and helping with home management?

Pick an AI Assistant

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are AI assistants designed to help with various tasks such as lesson planning and answering questions. This means they act as YOUR personal assistant. If you use Alexa on your iphone, you have been using AI.

I use ChatGTP as my AI assistant when I need help crafting lesson unique lesson plans for my kids, meal planning when I only have a few ingredients on hand, brainstorming games and gifts for parties and special events, and to help me in writing this blog!

How Can AI Be Used in Education?

There are many ways that AI can help in education. These are just a few of the ways that I have researched.

AI Assistants

Chat GTP (or any of the AI assistants) can help explain concepts, provide step by step solutions to science and math problems, grade composition assignments (you provide the rubric), and provide conversation practice for foreign language.

It can also create customized lesson plans tailored to the student’s age, skill level, and interests with activities, projects, and reading materials to enhance learning.

Chat GTP can Generate practice worksheets and for spelling, math, or language learning, provide interactive quizzes specific subjects or concepts and create flashcards.

Chat GTP can teach coding or other computer skills like Excel and PowerPoint. It can also create fun learning scenarios like mock debates, storytelling prompts, or role-playing activities.

It can adapt learning materials for children with specific learning challenges and offer techniques for breaking down concepts into manageable parts.

AI Tools Used in Education

PhotoMath uses AI to solve and explain math problems step-by-step – just snap a picture of the problem with your phone!

Duolingo and Babbel uses AI to personalize language learning for each student. Kids like this video game style of learning language. DuoLingo definitely has some “woke” content which makes learning pronouns difficult. I do like how it tailors the learning pace to the student.

Grammarly improves students’ writing skills by checking grammar, spelling, and style. My son took a Composition class at our local community college and the professor told his students to use Grammarly before submitting their work. Times have changed since I was in college!

Quizlet offers customizable study tools like flashcards and practice quizzes for efficient self-study. I have been using Quizlet for a long time and it is very helpful to my family! It also minimizes our need for paper flashcards that get lost of strewn throughout the house!

Microsoft Immersive Reader assists students with reading comprehension and accessibility needs (e.g., dyslexia). One of my daughters is dyslexic and I know we will need this technology to help her succeed in higher education. This is a plugin for your web browser.

DreamBox Learning offers adaptive math lessons personalized for each student’s proficiency level. I have not tried this yet but think it might be a great solution for kids struggling with math in homeschool. Sometimes moms feel overwhelmed with math when kids struggle, and this might be the solution to keep the learning fresh.

Code.org empowers students to learn coding with AI-driven tools and interactive lessons.

Khan Academy’s Khanmigo acts like a virtual tutor to help students understand difficult concepts across various subjects, including math, science, history by asking questions and feedback in a conversational way. It adapts to the student’s learning pace, similar to DuoLingo. It also offers improvements for writing assignments, and teaches code, Python and JavaScript

While these tools are incredibly helpful, remember they’re meant to support, not replace, your teaching – think of them as your teaching assistants that can help make lesson planning and instruction more efficient.

Understanding How AI Can Help In Education

AI tools can enhance your homeschooling experience, making your tasks more manageable and helping your students thrive. Start small, and as you become comfortable with these tools, gradually integrate them into your routine.

Remember that AI should enhance, not replace, the valuable one-on-one instruction that makes homeschooling special. By maintaining a balanced approach, you can harness the benefits of AI while preserving the personal touch that draws many families to homeschooling in the first place.
