Making memories without the overwhelm—one summer bucket list adventure at a time!

Summer Shouldn’t Be Stressful

As a homeschool mom of several kids (preschoolers to high schoolers!), I know that summer can feel like a whirlwind. We dream of fun, connection, and rest—but without a little planning, it can slip by in a blur of screen time and sibling squabbles.

That’s where the summer bucket list comes in. It’s not just about keeping the kids busy—it’s about creating intentional moments of joy, growth, and memory-making. Whether you’re traveling, staying local, or soaking in slow days on the porch, a bucket list helps your family savor the season.

Why Every Homeschool Family Needs a Summer Bucket List

  • ✅ Keeps kids of all ages engaged
  • ✅ Gives structure without a strict schedule
  • ✅ Encourages creativity and bonding
  • ✅ Prevents the “Mom, I’m bored” blues
  • ✅ Allows you to prioritize what matters most

How to Create a Summer Bucket List (Without the Overwhelm)

1. Pray and Prioritize

Start with prayer—ask the Lord what your family needs this summer. More rest? More outdoor time? Connection? Pick 3–5 focus areas to guide your list.

Your family might need:

  • Explore the neighborhood and towns around them. Have you been to the parks, museums and nature centers in your area?
  • To take a family vacation: when was the last time you traveled together?
  • Take a break from organized activities: summer is a great time to remember how to entertain yourself.
  • Read great books. Do a reading challenge through the library or start a family read aloud.
  • Good habit building: brush teeth, make beds, keep things tidy. With more free time, we can work on building better habits.
  • Family prayer time. Use the summer to take a family pilgrimage, learn about the church fathers or attend church camp.

These are just a few ideas to pray over as you make your summer bucket list!

2. Involve the Whole Family in the Summer Bucket List

Hold a family meeting. Hand out sticky notes or a big sheet of paper. Let everyone write or draw ideas—even your preschooler! You’ll be surprised what they come up with.

Letting my kids help with the summer bucket list planning makes my job as the summer planner easier. Sometimes their ideas are so simple it surprises me. Last year my kids wanted to “eat icecream,” “shoot firewords,” and “drink tea.” Easy enough!!

3. Balance the Bucket

As the mom, I get to ultimately decide how we spend our summers. Based on prayer, family suggestions and my own childhood memories, I make our bucket list balanced by aiming for a mix of:

  • 🧺 Simple at-home fun (popsicle picnics, water balloon fights)
  • 🚗 Local adventures (free splash pads, hiking trails, dollar movie days)
  • ✝️ Faith-based ideas (Bible scavenger hunt, family service project)
  • 🧠 Learning extras (DIY science experiments, nature journaling)
