If they are detecting in an old park, they could find money or other artifacts from long ago picnics or concerts. If they are at the beach, they might find pieces of shipwreck or lost jewelry. It is neat to consider the people and events that came before us.

Geology and ecology are also a big part of metal detecting. Digging in the dirt uncovers rocks and insects and other interesting features and animals of the land. It is interesting to think of all the things hidden from us that are right under our feet!

I think metal detecting also teaches patience and perseverance. As they realize how vast the underground world is, children will learn that not every signal leads to a valuable find. They will have to keep detecting, keep digging and evaluating their finds.

The primary goal of metal detecting is to have fun! My son likes to take his metal detector EVERYWHERE. He gets some funny looks when we are at a crowded park or beach, and he often gets a following of other kids asking questions. We haven’t dug any gold yet, but my family will keep trying!

For teens (or dad): This metal detector has the most features and even tells you what you might be digging for under the ground. It is very sensitive, and your kids will have a lot of fun with it. It is heavier than the models for younger kids. My 11-year-old graduated to this model.

For elementary age kids: This metal detector is still a great treasure finder, but it is less complex and lighter than the ones made for adults. We have this model, and my 9-year-old loves it. I like that it comes with a little rake and spade, and a bag to carry everything.
