To Shoe A Stallion: An Important Read for Christian Young Adults
Of all the books I read this year, To Shoe A Stallion, by Mark Wertin will be the most impactful story I have experienced. Mr. Wertin is trying to reach an important audience in a way that hasn’t been done before. If you are raising a Christian young adult, or if you struggle with discernment in your own life, you need To Shoe a Stallion on your list.
Mark Wertin is a writer, farmer, builder, homeschooling dad and happy husband. He is a faithful Catholic Christian, and he and his wife are raising a growing family on Sacred Heart Homestead, in the middle of the Midwest United States. Here is my honest review of To Shoe a Stallion.
This book is about love, relationships, family life, sex, homesteading and food. Sounds good already, yes?
To Shoe a Stallion is a story about a young man and a young woman discerning God’s will for their lives. Will they marry? Will they homestead as Hannah’s family had? Will they accept children? How will they follow God’s plan for their lives?
This book shows our modern American young adults what it means to discern the life they are meant to live. It is an important lesson that our youth (and adults) are lacking in today’s world. The story is woven together beautifully, and the homestead settings will teach you new ideals about community building, regenerative farming and holistic living that you may not have considered before.
I would recommend this book to all Christian highschoolers, college aged young adults and those who enjoy a good story about love, relationships, family life, sex, homesteading and food.

My husband Jake and I were honored to be on their latest episode, where we talked about country life, big family living, and how to discern God’s will through prayer.
Both of our families have noticed that more and more families are homeschooling, seeking country living and hoping to live a more intentional life, just like the characters in this novel.
We have also noticed that young adults are seeking something different than the lifestyle that they may have grown up in but are lacking in mentors to show them a different way.
This book seeks to answer some of those questions and provoke young adults to think through their own family experiences, education and desires for their own lives. It asks them to consider what they are made for and how to pray for God’s will to achieve their hopes and goals.
